Forget the Night Life, Casino Action and a ugly hangover; Las Vegas has another side off the strip that provides just as much fun. Learn how you can discover some great activities off the strip and still enjoy Las Vegas.
Green Valley Ranch Resort
The Green Valley Ranch is in the East Valley side of Las Vegas and offers a great location to venture off the strip and enjoy some great activities. The resort is family friendly and affordable during the Fall / Winter season. Room rates range $79 to $159 per night, (check with hotel for exact pricing). GVR has a great pool, spa, and a variety of shopping and restaurants all at the resort location. This hotel is known as a local’s hangout and has a comfortable, laid back feel and personality. I liked this resort because I did not feel surrounded by the crowds that you typically find at most of the resorts on the strip.
Mountain Biking
Hoover Dam/ Bolder City
There are two sides of the valley that surround Las Vegas. The East Valley side is where you will find Bolder City and Lake Mead. This is the home of the River Mountains Trail. You can bring your own Mtn. Bike or arrange a guided tour complete with a rental bike through KyakLasVegas.com. These folks will not let you down and will cater your ride according to your skill level. The River Mountains Trail is easy to moderate and great for sight seeing.
Red Rock Canyon
In less than 30 minutes from my hotel, I drove to the other side of Las Vegas, called Red Rock Canyon. This national park area is ideal for the person who loves anything to do with the outdoors. Everywhere you look, there is someone road cycling, running, hiking, rock climbing, and of course, mountain biking. You can arrange a tour with LasVegasCyclery.com and they supply everything. I took a more advanced, single-track trail ride and my ride was cut short due to a broken chain.
GolfTuscany Golf Club is located on the way to Lake Mead on the Henderson side of the valley. It is resort course design and has beautiful homes outlying most of the 18 holes. It is a family friendly golf course, however, make sure you call the golf shop and let them know that you have children who golf and they will accommodate your tee time. The golf range and practice area is modest and practical. The price for a round was reasonable at $40 per player. I saved by going online at,(GolfNow.com). For more information on the golf course layout and current conditions, contact
TuscanyGolfClub.com.
