Winter Family Adventure Travel

BishopCAIn less than a tank of gas from Los Angeles, you could be enjoying an exciting Rhino Adventure Tour in Bishop California. This is a great weekend travel idea for the family that enjoys adventure. Bishop California is located approximately 200 miles north east of Los Angeles and is primarily known for its rock climbing community. This little town hosts a variety of year around events and has all the comforts of a big city, without the traffic.

Rhino Adventure Tours

Golden State Cycle is the local Yamaha and Honda dealership in Bishop and is home to the Rhino Adventure Tours. Owner, Randy Gillespie runs the outfit out of this family owned business. The Rhino is an all-wheeled drive vehicle, complete with a roll bar and full harness seat belts. Children under the ages of 12 are recommended to wear helmets and they can be rented at the location.

Into the Wilderness...

You can arrange a guided tour, or a self-guided tour. My Adventure Family took the self-guided option. Just a few minutes with the staff at Golden State Cycle and a copy of a map, and we were on our way... Make sure you are dressed appropriately for the weather in the area. These vehicles do not have windshields to block the air and the sunny days during the winter can hide the brisk wind from the valley floor. Pack a lunch and refreshments to enjoy along the way and bring a camera. These vehicles are equipped with GPS tracking device and cell service is available throughout the area. If you get off course, just make a phone call to Randy and the staff at Golden State Cycle will locate you on their GPS map, and get you back on your way!

What to See and Do…

The winter time provides a variety of wild life to view when you take the tour. Migrating deer, elk and occasional coyote sighting are common. There were a variety of birds, squirrels and rabbits along the trail that were also sighted. You will also see a variety of campsites near the base of the rock climbing areas. Bishop is home to some of the best rock climbing and has visitors year-around to take on some of the most pristine rock climbing boulders in California.

The trails the Rhino’s use are forestry roads that are clearly marked and provide ample room for your vehicle. Our destination was to get to a waterfall near the base of Mount Tom. We parked our Rhino’s and then took a moderate hike to the waterfall.  As you will see in the video, we were able to capture the waterfall as it was beginning to freeze into ice.

The Rhino Adventure Tour by Golden State Cycle in Bishop is a great way to ‘get off the grid’ and enjoy some adventure and quality time with your family. For more information on booking your next tour, go to: www.GoldenStateCycle.com and contact Randy Gillespie.
